..........................................
The only child of a guitar-vocalist father and English teacher mother, Katrina showed a natural flair for music as a child. Starting formal piano lessons aged seven, she went on to complete all eight grades with distinction as well as achieving the professional performance diplomas A.Mus.A (Associate of Music Australia) and L.Mus.A (Licentiate of Music Australia). During her school years she also studied the clarinet and alto and tenor saxophones, performing in many orchestras and jazz bands.
Singing has always been a passion and naturally led to her career as a piano vocalist, combining her exemplary technique on the piano with a natural flair for performance and her innate vocal ability. Her style always befits the mood of the venue, and her repertoire covers rock classics, smooth jazz standards, classical favourites, current pop hits, and original compositions.
Heavily influenced by the Jazz vocal greats - Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Frank Sinatra, and the Australian trumpeter and vocalist Vince Jones - Katrina has developed an original style that blends jazz sensibility with the popular music of her own generation.
During her time at University, Katrina turned her hand to composition, penning her first pop song “Bed Of Roses", and going on to compose several instrumental works for violin and piano. Many of these have subsequently been reworked into pop songs, and she continues to build on an impressive collection of catchy songs which demonstrate her ear for detail and fondness of a big ballad sound.
In Dubai, Katrina was asked to write a song for the proposed Muhammad Ali Centre UAE, and has scored music for film including her composition ”I Let You Go” for the 2010 “Tropfest” Australian Short Film Festival.
Katrina’s original and distinctive music comes from her experience and love of so many different forms of music, and her desire to remain true to her own unique voice.
Her range of influences include Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Debussy, Gabriel Faure and Erik Satie; Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, Oscar Perterson, Bobby Timmons, Grant Green, Ray Charles, George Benson, McCoy Tyner, Thelonius Monk, Antonio Carlos Jobim; Stevie Wonder, Carole King, Fleetwood Mac, Burt Bacharach, Jimi Hendrix, Crowded House, Jamiroquai, Ingognito, to name but a few.
Katrina is also an experienced and accomplished piano and vocal tutor, having worked for many years at the prestigious Sydney schools The Scots College and SCEGGS, and privately as a tutor and piano accompanist. While living in Bath in the UK, Katrina gave vocal masterclasses and worked with new up and coming singers, recording and producing their demo CDs in her home studio.
In Dubai from 2010 to 2017, Katrina worked at the Dubai British School as a primary classroom music specialist, and also as a piano and vocal tutor for the Gems Music Academy, and the Dubai English Speaking School. She also gave private classes from her home studio on Sheik Zayed Road, Downtown Dubai.
